Welcome to GeoLanguages, one of Geobop's newest websites. It is essentially an American Sign Language (ASL) comparative dictionary and learning guide, though I'm beginning to work in a little Spanish.

About This Site

Very briefly, I made a list of words/signs featured in five different online ASL references and linked them to each reference, making comparisons and adding various notes.

You can learn how everything works on the Introduction page.

The Dictionary section is essentially finished, though it will take a long time to refine it. In the meantime, many pages are very slow loading. To see what I'm talking about, compare S (the biggest of my unedited pages) to J (an edited page).

The Topics section is probably the most useful portion of the site. Unfortunately, only a few pages are finished: Mind, Thought and More Mind Games.

Disclaimer

My degree is in ecology, not linguistics. I studied Spanish in high school and spent a few weeks in Mexico, years ago. I took one quarter of French in college and spent one week in Paris (years ago). I took a handful of ASL (sign language) classes years ago and just recently began studying it again, primarily using online resources. You might think of this website as sort of an experiment, one that undoubtedly contains many errors. Though I've linked to thousands of words/signs on five websites - ASLPro.com, Signing Savvy, Handspeak, ASL University and Master's Tech - none of them have endorsed my project, nor are any of them actively working with me. I simply linked to their websites and commented on many of their signs.

I'm not really qualified to recommend a single best online ASL reference. However, I've found all five of the websites listed above very useful. Please note that Signing Savvy and Handspeak offer special features for monthly or yearly fee, while ASLPro.com solicits donations. Serious ASL students may want to investigate the special features each of these websites offer.
